The Dangerous Journey of Sherman the Sheep

by Dean Davis

Sherman the sheep lived with his parents in a far-away land called God's Country. His family considered themselves blessed for they all belonged to the little flock of the Good Shepherd.

Sherman meets some sheep from another flock who tell him about their exciting adventures at "Pleasure Mountain". He longs to impress his new friends and travel up the mountain. When his father sees him talking to the other rams he discovers that they have told his son of the excitement of going up the mountain. He warns Sherman "The true name of that place is Sin Mountain, for all that is seen and done there is displeasing to God. Your friends call it Pleasure Mountain. Sad to say, that is partly true. Those who climb it do find pleasure .... for a while. But your friends didn't tell you that the pleasures soon fade away, leaving only guilt and shame." Sherman does not take his wise father's advice. He decides to go up the mountain.

I hope parents take the time to read this wonderful book with their children. There are numerous opportunities to use Sherman's adventures to discuss the temptations of our own world. Dean Davis captures the excitement of Sherman's travels page after page. Young children will read of the love and grace of the Good Shepherd. Then they can grasp how Jesus Christ is our Good Shepherd who guides us to making right choices. And if we stray off down the wrong path, He is there to rescue us and welcome us back with His love. Dean Davis said: "I hope kids will get clear on the meaning of real friendship. And I hope they will somehow understand that in the end there is only one true adventure, the adventure of walking with Christ through the dangerous wilderness of this world."
