Gennieve's Sick Mother

Lizzie Gandy spoke softly to her daughter, "Gennie, please go down the road and ask our neighbor Mrs. Green if she would come over and help with our chores since I am so very sick"

Gennieve quickly obeyed her mother. She was very concerned about her mother because she knew her mother was very sick. Her mother had never asked any of her neighbors for help before.

Gennieve knocked on Mrs. Green's door.
Mrs. Green opened her door and looked very displeased to be bothered in the middle of the morning. "What do you want", she said bitterly.
Gennieve replied "My mother is very sick, and she would really appreciate it if you could help her with some of the chores."
"Well, I have way too many chores to do myself. I do not have time to help anyone else."
Then Mrs. Green quickly shut her door.

Gennieve walked back home very upset and brewed over how mean her neighbor was. She knew her mother was too sick to get out of bed. When Gennieve got back home she told her mother that Mrs. Green refused to come and help, but she would help her Mom.

Mrs. Gandy smiled at her daughter, and said "Thanks Gennie, you are a very special daughter". Gennieve helped her mother, and her mother soon got well.

          A year later

Mrs. Green was very sick, so she sent someone over to Mrs. Gandy's home to ask her for help with her chores. Gennieve heard the question and remembered how Mrs. Green had shut the door on her last year. She could not believe that Mrs. Green would send someone over to ask her Mother for help when Mrs Green had refusing to help her mother when she was sick.

What would her mother do? What would you do?

          What Would Jesus Do?

The above story is based on a true story that Kem Barlow sent to us about her mother Gennieve Gandy, and her grandmother Lizzie Bell Gandy.
(Mrs. Green was NOT the name of the neighbor).
The paragraph below is what Mrs. Gandy did. It is written by Kem.

"My greatgrandmother went to help her without any questions. Hours later when my greatgrandmother came home, my grandmother asked her why she had gone to help her when the year before that same lady had refused to help my greatgrandmother. My grandmother said that her mother replied
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".
My grandmother said that one act by her mother taught her more about the "Golden Rule" than anything else and also deepened her respect for her mother. My grandmother remembered that event clearly for the rest of her life.

I loved my grandmother more than life itself and when she told me that story, I realized it was because that not only did she love her mother, but she also loved me as well."
