God sent a great wind on the sea, and a violent storm arose. The ship was about to break apart. The sailors were afraid of the storm. But Jonah had gone below deck. He laid down and fell into a deep sleep.
The other men woke Jonah up and asked "How can you sleep with this storm? Pray to your God so that he might stop the storm and save us." Jonah told them about his God who is Lord over all the Earth and Heaven. He told them that he was running away from God and if they would throw him overboard, the storm would stop. The men did not want to hurt Jonah, but they were afraid for their lives so they threw Jonah into the sea. As soon as Jonah was in the sea the storm stopped and the sea grew calm again.
Then God sent a huge whale to swallow Jonah. Jonah stayed inside the whale's belly for three days and three nights. While Jonah was in the whale's belly he prayed to God and told Him he was sorry for running away. "Please give me another chance," pleaded Jonah, "I will do whatever you want me to do."
God heard Jonah's prayers and had mercy on him. On the third day God showed grace to Jonah. God told the whale to swim to shore and spit Jonah out of his belly. Jonah thanked God for saving him. God, again told Jonah to go to Nineveh and tell the people to turn from their bad ways. This time Jonah did what God asked.
Jonah told the people of Nineveh what God did, and to turn from their bad ways. The people listened to Jonah and were sorry for doing bad things. The people of Nineveh prayed to God and asked God to forgive them. They promised God that they would be good again. This pleased God, and He showed grace to the people of Nineveh and did not destroy them because Jonah obeyed God.
